National Philanthropy Day Highlight: The Cooke Foundation
Throughout the month of November, the Association of Fundraising Professionals will be highlighting honorees from National Philanthropy Day chapter events around the world, showcasing outstanding donors, volunteers, corporations, foundations and others who are being recognized for their commitment to change and philanthropy.
Today, we’re featuring the Cooke Foundation, which is being honored by the AFP Aloha Chapter as its Outstanding Foundation for 2019.
Celebrating its 100th year, the Cooke Foundation’s mission is to support worthy endeavors in the community that founder Sam Cooke and family feel will make a significant different in the betterment and welfare of the people of Hawaii.
A founding chairman for the Board of Governors for the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii, Cooke raised upwards of $15 million to protect key conservation lands on Molokai, which included shorelines and watershed forest area.
The Cooke Foundation has been a strong supporter of the Nature Conservancy Hawaii with a $1 million grant supporting the Molokai Land Trust, in which another member of the Cooke family – Richard A. Cooke III – served as a founding member.
The Cooke Foundation continues to support the community, along with its jointly nominated organizations: The Nature Conservancy, Manoa Heritage Center, Honolulu Museum of Art and the Hanahau’oli School.
