The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Global, the largest organization of charitable fundraisers in the world, is pleased to announce that 5 new board members will be joining the board for terms beginning January 1, 2024.

The board is currently chaired by Birgit Smith Burton, executive director of the African American Development Officers Network, who began her two-year term in January of 2023.

Smith Burton has the distinction of being the first African American woman in AFP’s 62-year history to be voted chair of the AFP Global Board. The addition of these new board members continues AFP’s proactive efforts to create a board that is representative of the depth and breadth of diversity in viewpoints, experiences, and identities that exists within the AFP membership and the fundraising profession at large.

“I’m so proud to be leading a board that reflects the voices of our AFP community,” said Smith Burton. “AFP and the fundraising profession have not shied away from having the difficult conversations that foster true growth and progress in inclusion, diversity, equity, and access. As a result, we are better equipped to address these key issues, for the good of our industry, our donors, and the people we serve.”

“These new additions to the board bring a wealth of experience and unique perspectives that will make them invaluable assets to our leadership team,” said AFP president & CEO Mike Geiger, MBA, CPA. “I’m excited to continue the amazing work that this board has started, to advance our organization and deliver world class programming and resources to support our diverse member community around the world.”
