Emerging Leaders

Coming off another successful AFP LEAD (AFP’s annual leadership conference) earlier this month in St. Louis, I’m reminded just how important it is to nurture the next generation of fundraising professionals —not only for the sustainability of our nonprofit organizations, but for the continued impact that philanthropy has on communities across the globe. These emerging leaders bring fresh ideas, bold perspectives, and a passion for driving meaningful change.

We saw that at AFP LEAD, but AFP also offers numerous opportunities year-round for emerging leaders to grow their careers, and for the current leaders who support them, to facilitate this growth.

Here are some of the upcoming ways that emerging leaders can get involved:

Opportunities for Career Growth and Recognition:

2025 AFP/Blackbaud Emerging Leader Mentor Program: This 8-month structured mentorship program connects emerging leaders with inspirational mentors to help new fundraisers develop critical leadership skills and grow in the profession. Fundraisers who have been in the field for ten years or less are encouraged to apply before the November 8 deadline. If you have expertise to share and are interested in investing in the future of our sector, consider submitting an application to be a mentor in this program. We are constantly in need of more mentors, so we have a diverse pool of candidates, and we can pair our emerging leaders with people that have the skills and lived experiences that match their unique needs.

AFP Outstanding Young Professional Award: Every year, AFP highlights the work of up to two young professionals under the age of 31 who have demonstrated exemplary, creative, and innovative work in their careers, as well as a strong commitment to the profession, including engagement with AFP. Submit a nomination for the 2025 Outstanding Young Professional Award to see one of your colleagues from your organization or your chapter recognized for their achievements on the general session stage at AFP ICON, taking place in Seattle, WA, April 27-29. The deadline to apply is December 18.

Upcoming Events:

Emerging Leaders Affinity Group Networking Meeting: Join AFP for our Emerging Leaders Affinity Group Networking Meeting, November 7 at 1 p.m. ET. Get to know other fundraisers in a similar career stage, discuss your challenges and successes, and come away with a stronger network of peers.

Emerging Leaders Virtual Workshop: Join us November 19 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. ET for this exciting conference geared toward helping you develop your fundraising skillset and advance your career. We’ll cover topics such as building authentic donor relationships, developing successful annual giving campaigns, taking advantage of AFP career resources, and more!

Resources:
