One of the most frequent questions we get from members is whether we have data on compensation in the fundraising industry. Compensation data is crucial for salary negotiations, organizational recruitment and retention, as well as demonstrating the career potential of fundraising to the next generation. That’s why AFP publishes our annual Compensation and Benefits Report, providing members with valuable salary benchmarks, broken down by organizational size and location, and factors such as employee gender and education. Fun fact: AFP has been publishing our compensation survey since 2000.

The data for this report comes from YOU, our AFP member community, which is why I want to use today’s Monday Message to encourage our members here in the U.S. and Canada to participate in this year’s survey!

This survey is a great example of how we can influence industry change by coming together as a community. One organization’s data alone won’t tell us much, but data from the many organizations of our 27,000+ members tells a different story.

Looking at our 2022 survey, we can see some clear wins, like the overall 1.5% increase in average salary. But we can also see some failures, like the $20,000 difference in average salary between men and women.

The more fundraisers who participate, the more reliable our data is, and the more we can use it to celebrate what our industry is doing right, and call attention to the areas that could use improvement.

As many of you know, AFP has made it a part of our mission to lead by example when it comes to inclusion, diversity, equity, and access. That’s why we’ve adopted policies such as requiring salary ranges on all positions posted on our career center — a small but important step towards greater salary transparency -  and, at AFP Global, accepting relevant work experience in the place of formal education.

This survey is one more step in promoting equity in fundraising.

If you have not yet completed the survey, U.S and Canadian members can use the links below to submit their response. Make sure to include your name and email at the end of the survey so we can remove you from future email reminders.

We look forward to sharing the survey results with members later this year!

In the meantime, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email at Mike.Geiger@afpglobal.org or on Twitter at @AFPMikeGeiger. I’d love to hear from you.
